The Most Extraordinary Patterns transports readers to 1985 Sudan, and the turmoil of the Second Sudanese Civil War. In this anthology of fan fiction based on the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Robert A. Van Wyck M.S. 217Q’s seventh graders revisit real-life protagonist Salva Dut’s journey from child refugee to clean water activist. These pages imagine pivotal moments in Salva’s life unfolding differently, view events from the perspectives of supporting characters, and introduce new characters the world has yet to meet. They navigate war, prejudice, family separation, refugee camps, unforgiving wilderness, and the ever-present need for clean drinking water.
