Teaching Artist (creative writing specialty)
We are collecting resumes for dynamic and experienced writing-focused Teaching Artists for the 2025-2026 school year. We are specifically seeking applicants with availability during after-school hours, who speak Spanish at a fluent or near-fluent level and/or have experience teaching English Language Learners.
Please read through for full details of how to apply.
Teaching Artists lead short-term, project-based residencies in New York City public schools, nonprofit organizations, and city-run programs. 826NYC’s in-schools and partnerships programs are tailored to the needs of each partner school and organization. Residencies typically range from 6 to 12 sessions in length, lasting approximately the same number of weeks. Most projects culminate in an anthology of student work, which is professionally designed and printed for distribution.
Possible projects that 826NYC’s Teaching Artists may work on include: memoir, poetry, short stories, argumentative writing, playwriting, and speculative fiction. This list is not exhaustive, and projects are typically designed in partnership with classroom educators and program staff to embrace themes and genres of interest to participating students.
Teaching Artists have placements throughout the year based on schedule and expertise.
Overview of Position:
826NYC is seeking Teaching Artists to design curriculum and lead residencies at schools and youth-serving organizations around New York City, typically spanning 6 to 12 weeks each but up to an entire school year. Teaching Artists work in three distinct partnership programs: Extended Day, Young Writers Publish, and Personal Statement Workshops.
Teaching Artists should be writers who are passionate about literacy education and have experience teaching writing. This position will be supervised and supported by the 826NYC Director of Education. Teaching Artists may also have the support of trained volunteers during workshops, as schedules allow. Planning hours/days are flexible and can often be completed asynchronously and remotely. The end-goal for many in-school and partnership residencies is to produce a professionally designed and printed anthology of the students’ writing, although some projects may instead focus on personal statements for college applications, or be integrated into a school’s on-site after-school program, and will not result in publications. For publishing projects, the teaching artist will work with 826NYC staff to support the publishing process.
