We’re excited to introduce you to our September Author of the Month, Junaynah R.!
What is your favorite thing you’ve written recently? Tell us a bit about it!
My favorite thing I’ve written recently is an essay on mental health representation in the media. Specifically, I explored many flawed representations, their adverse effects on audiences, and questions such as what distinguishes an accurate depiction of trauma and mental illness from an unnecessarily disturbing and harmful one.
What advice would you give someone writing for the first time?
If I had to give advice to someone writing for the first time, I would say to just start! Getting into writing can feel intimidating or overwhelming, but there are so many different forms of writing that everyone can find one that they enjoy. Also, do not worry too much about making it perfect on the first try, and instead, enjoy the process—you can always edit later!.
What are three words you would use to describe 826NYC and the Teen Writers’ Collective?
Three words I would use to describe TWC are fun, supportive, and inspiring!
What are you most looking forward to in TWC this year?
I am most looking forward to all the wonderful opportunities available at TWC, including workshops and events such as our recent writer’s panel. Moreover, I am excited to continue developing my writing skills this year through our lessons, creative projects, and collaborating with my fellow writers at TWC.
If someone was considering joining 826NYC, what would you tell them?
If someone were considering joining 826NYC, I would tell them about the incredible sense of community here. It is truly inspiring to be surrounded by so many other passionate and talented writers with similar goals, and they will gain so much from joining.
