The 826 Space Voyage: Sci-Fi & Circuitry
Do aliens visit the dentist? Can you pop popcorn on Mars? And will I need an extra pair of pants for interdimensional travel? Seeking aspiring space explorers to help us uncover the secrets and truths of the galaxy. Adventurers, innovators, and Area 51 enthusiasts are welcome to this interstellar workshop to invent technology out of this world, as well as incredible cosmic space stories to go with it! From tales of alien vacations or AI hostile takeovers to a brand-new device that will allow you to watch interdimensional cable and order the finest slice on Pizza Planet from the comfort of your bedroom. Let’s explore your most life-saving or world-shaking ideas!
We’ll write science fiction stories that envision new worlds and new possibilities, where students become the mad scientists, inventors, and tech geniuses–or evil masterminds, if that’s the way the spaceship pendulum swings. We’ll also take on the basics of circuitry and prototyping using Little Bits, and make models of all the newfangled doodads and futuristic thingamabobs that star in our stories.
By the end of the week, the students will create space themed sci-fi stories and prototypes of galaxy-altering devices to go with them. We’ll end the week with a special outer space edition of Shark Tank… where students will show off their inventions to admiring investors (AKA friends and family).
About 826NYC Day Camp
In 826NYC’s day camp, we bring the joy and excitement of storytelling off the page. Each week, we pair a fun writing theme with hands-on art and learning activities, matching performances with playwriting, comics with heroic tales, and science fiction with circuit-building.
This day camp will include a daily trip to JJ Byrne Playground for kickball, climbing, and other outdoor shenanigans. Camp hours are 9:00-3:00, Monday-Friday.
