Overview
Seeking young writers with a story to tell! Join Adam Rubin, the author of beloved books including Dragons Love Tacos, Secret Pizza Party, The Ice Cream Machine, and many more for a very special short story workshop at 826NYC. In five one-hour sessions, students will develop and workshop a short story that they’ll work on between classes. Participants will get feedback and practice writing and editing strategies that they can use in future writing projects. Everyone will leave with a short story to be proud of, and a printed chapbook with the class’s collected works!
826NYC will provide pizza dinner every week for this evening class.
Requirements for Participation
This very special workshop will require some extra hard work! Students MUST come to this workshop with a story idea in mind, and MUST make time to work on their story independently in between workshops. Here are the requirements:
- Students must attend all 5 in-person workshops (February 25, March 4, March 11, March 18, March 25).
- Students must come to the first class with an idea for a story and title.
- Students must work on their stories independently in between classes. We will be using Google Docs in this class, so you must have a device at home (laptop, tablet, or desktop computer) where you can go online and use Google Docs.
- Students must come to every workshop ready to work hard on their writing, and have fun!
Class Schedule
This program will meet in-person at 826NYC (372 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn) on February 25, March 4, March 11, March 18, and March 25 from 6:15-7:15 PM.
Students will type up their final draft before the final class.
Who Can Participate
Story Time is a free program for writers in 4th-6th grade whose families meet our income qualifications, in keeping with 826NYC’s commitment to make programs available for young writers who might not otherwise have access. Students whose family income does not qualify may apply separately for our weekend classes, Write Away Workshops or Dungeons & Dragons & Writers, for a low enrollment fee.
Our current income cap for enrollment is 80% of NYC’s area median income, or $124,000/year or less for a family of four.
