“I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined the Board of 826NYC, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit empowering young writers to find their voice and tell their stories.
It was through a similar student program that I unknowingly discovered my life’s calling when I won a national essay contest sponsored by Captain Gerald Coffee. The subject was Living Heroes, and I shared the story of a woman who inspired me. Looking back, I was doing exactly what would become my life’s work: amplifying stories of remarkable women who lift up others. That experience planted the seeds for what would become The Uplifters Project and showed me the power of storytelling to create change and foster community.
Today, I watch my own teenage daughters weave worlds with words (one crafting historical queer romance novels with dreams of becoming the youngest NYT bestseller, the other composing songs and plays that center a kinder, gentler world). Their creativity reminds me daily of writing’s power to help us envision and then create the world we want to see.
Joining 826NYC feels like coming full circle. This remarkable organization believes, as I do, that every young person deserves mentors who will invest in their voice and stories. I’m excited and honored to help extend this gift to more young voices in NYC.”
