We’re excited to introduce you to our November Volunteer of the Month, Henry Kueppers!
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
After purchasing a can of chutzpah at the store, I heard about the writing workshops 826 offers and knew that if this organization had the capabilities to contain the intangible spirit of chutzpah, it must be one hell of a place to volunteer!
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
I appreciate how open and receptive the entire 826 staff is. They make an incredible effort to engage with the volunteers and create a welcoming community where everyone’s ideas are heard.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Write Away Workshops?
Working with the students. It’s the highlight of my week when I get to ask them questions, listen to their ideas, and read their stories. They inspire me a lot but they also make sure to humble me with questions like, “you’re how old?!” or “you’re not even getting paid to be here?!”
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
I love finding new ways to waste my time, whether it’s googling, “Tyra Banks height” or “Roger Federer height” or even, “Bernie Sanders height”
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Be yourself. The students can tell when you’re putting on an act. If you’re genuinely interested and excited to work with them, they’ll respond to that positive energy.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
Shape-Shifting.
