We’re excited to introduce you to our April Volunteer of the Month, Tess Raser!
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
I first got involved with 826 because I live in the area and often walk by. I decided to volunteer because I’ve been out of the classroom almost two years after teaching for about ten, and I really missed working directly with young people and their writing.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
I have loved the selection of diverse and rigorous texts that Summer has chosen. It’s been a joy discussing writers like Nate Marshall and Patti Smith with these curious young people. 826 trusts young people with texts that more traditional teachers might avoid.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Teen Writers’ Collective?
It is fantastic seeing how free the teens feel to explore weird and unique ideas in their writing. They’re not self-conscious, as they might be in the classroom. I’ve loved seeing the teens find their own unique writing styles and voices. I also enjoy all of our inside jokes and seeing the young people connect with each other, even though they’re from different schools and neighborhoods.
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
I work at an educational non-profit professionally. For fun, I read and write a lot–mostly longer form essays. I also take photos on an old camera and play with them in the darkroom, just a few blocks from 826.
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Try to remember one unique thing about each kid or find one shared joke or interest and bring it up from time to time. The effort and connection will mean a lot to the young people!
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
I’m really good at learning new languages.
