May Volunteer of the Month: Lili Schwartz

News —— May 3, 2025

We’re excited to introduce you to our May Volunteer of the Month, Lili Schwartz! Lili has designed several books for 826NYC, including last year’s collaboration with P.S. 316 and the Brooklyn Museum, The Lights Are Bright Everywhere I Look.

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?

I was shopping in the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. and saw a flyer looking for a book designer. My entire experience in the store was so positive that I left with both a purchase and a volunteer opportunity.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

My favorite part is the people. From the full-time staff to the program participants, everyone I’ve met at 826NYC is so welcoming and inspiring and truly the BEST!

What’s your favorite part of designing 826NYC publications?
I began my career as a book designer for publishing companies. I’m now a freelance graphic designer with clients in a variety of industries, but I’ve always missed designing books. My favorite part about working on 826NYC publications is knowing the impact the books will have. The young authors in 826NYC’s programs are so proud to see their name on a page and their writing in a real book! And I’m very proud to help make that happen.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

When I’m not sitting in front of my computer designing for 826NYC or any of my other clients, I’m out exploring the city! I enjoy going to art museums, music concerts, and dance clubs. Especially dancing outside in the summer!

826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?

I would tell a new volunteer about all the different ways to get involved at 826NYC. There are so many roles for new volunteers or even long-term volunteers who want to try something new. For example, besides designing books, I’ve also represented 826NYC at fairs and events. Supporting the organization by engaging with the community is yet another way to volunteer at 826NYC.

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

I have a lot of energy! I can’t use it to fly or lift really heavy things, but I hope that my enthusiasm can make a difference. I’m thrilled to share my superpower with 826NYC!!
