We’re excited to introduce you to our March Volunteer of the Month, Adina Zeth! Adina is a dedicated member of our volunteer cohort who has most recently worked with our Dungeons & Dragons & Writers program.
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
I first heard about 826NYC when I met Summer and Danny at Brooklyn Pride. At the time, I had recently graduated with a Master of Public Health and was missing creative writing. I had previously taught a Dungeons and Dragons class and was a camp counselor and loved the idea of combining the two! I knew that it would be a wonderful way to be engaged with a creative writing community and help to support and nurture young writers on their journey.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
My favorite part of 826NYC is being part of such a kind and supportive community. I have watched kids come out of their shell and become more confident in expressing their creativity thanks to the support not only from staff, but from their fellow students. The students challenge each other to be creative and take risks, and it is wonderful to see the kids supporting each other.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Dungeons & Dragons & Writers?
I love seeing the students challenge Nick [the Teaching Artist] with their intricate plans and in-depth ideas that they have not only for their characters, but the campaign overall. The format of Dungeons and Dragons really challenges students to consider the motivations behind their characters’ actions. It’s a joy to see them step out of their comfort zone because it’s what their character would do. I also love when the kids incorporate multiple forms of media into the class like music and art so that they can fully express their characters; it’s so much fun and really brings the setting (and class) to life!
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
When I’m not at 826NYC, I enjoy spending time with my dog Sadie and dabbling in hobbies like crocheting, sewing, and woodworking. I also consider myself a writer and am currently working on a novel!
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Some advice I would give to a new volunteer is to come in with an open mind and prepare to be amazed. The students will constantly surprise and challenge you in the best way possible, but there is always support if you need it! Just like the students, you will learn a lot along the way.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
My superpower is gardening! I have a knack for being able to nurture seedlings into fully-grown plants and it’s amazing to see what some water and sunshine can do. Last summer I grew more basil than I knew what to do with, even after making lots and lots of pesto!
