We’re excited to introduce you to our June Volunteer of the Month, Finola Austin! Finola has volunteered with 826NYC’s Write Away Workshops for the past three years.
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
I wanted to volunteer with children while doing something I’m good at. Trust me: I’m MUCH better at reading/writing than sports! Then I found 826NYC and, since I live nearby, it seemed like the perfect fit.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
I find 826NYC a healing “classroom” to be part of. When I was at school, we had so many rules, a uniform etc. But 826 feels supportive, rather than draconian. For example, I love how the instructors and volunteers trust even young children to go to the restroom or grab a drink of water, without seeking “permission,” and how everyone is encouraged to “be weird” rather than conform.
What’s your favorite part of Write Away Workshops?
The kids’ imaginations. I love what they come up with week-over-week.
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
I’m VP, Creative & Client Strategy at Linqia, an influencer marketing agency, and I’m also a published novelist (my novel, Bronte’s Mistress, is for parents, not kids though!).
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Listen and help kids express their ideas, rather than foregrounding your own. This can be hard since, as adults, we know all the tropes and expected answers. But children often come in with a different perspective that can be hard to anticipate.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
I possess superhuman strength when it comes to word games.
