We’re excited to introduce you to our January Volunteer of the Month, Kat Figurelli! Kat is a dedicated member of our volunteer cohort, and is currently involved in our Write After School program.
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
Back in college, I co-taught a creative writing class for 4th grade students and discovered that I really love working with kids, especially in an art-related capacity. I continued to volunteer with a few different organizations after I graduated, but stopped during the pandemic lockdowns. By the time I felt ready to start again, I had discovered 826 totally by chance and was so excited to dive back into working with young writers.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
In the little over a year I’ve been volunteering at 826, I’ve been amazed at seeing so many of the students grow in confidence alongside their progress as writers. The staff at 826 create such a lovely, welcoming space where I’ve seen so many students feel safe to take risks and be themselves.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Write After School?
Definitely getting to workshop ideas and chat with the students! They’re so curious and creative—I love asking them questions about which direction they’d take a story in, or about media that they’re currently into that influences their work.
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
Outside of 826, I’m a writer myself—mostly fiction and some articles reviewing albums or concerts. I’m also trying to learn drums, and love photography, hiking, and film nights with friends. (Most recently a Nosferatu marathon to prep for the new movie).
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Be curious and open-minded! Asking questions and engaging with a student about their passions and interests helps build a solid relationship that translates into helping them grow as writers.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
I’ve always been super clumsy—which means I’ve also become an expert at catching things and now have insane reflexes.
