We’re excited to introduce you to our December Volunteer of the Month, Ronnie Wolff! Ronnie is a dedicated member of our volunteer cohort, and is currently involved in our Write After School program.
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
I worked with children most of my life, and had been retired for about five years. I was really missing being around kids. I found 826NYC through an internet search of organizations that work with children through the arts. I attended an orientation a few days later, and was impressed by the program and the people I met. I felt like I’d have a chance to use my creativity in working with students. I started as a volunteer on a field trip, loved it, but a few days later we went into pandemic lockdown. I stayed involved through online programing, and eventually started in-person volunteering in the Write After School program.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
What I like most about 826NYC is how every student is valued and appreciated. The program meets students where they are in their skills and interests. Students are encouraged to express themselves and use their imagination as they develop their writing skills. They also have the opportunity to feel part of a community, and many friendships develop as a result.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Write After School?
I enjoy both the individual work with students, as well as the group work. My favorite moments are watching a student when an idea for their writing clicks. The creativity and excitement takes off as they develop their stories. I also enjoy the interaction between the students. In the small groups they give each other feedback and encouragement. I love seeing these relationships develop and grow.
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
I take art classes and draw, paint and make collages. I love to read, and have been part of a book group for over 25 years. I am a conversation partner as a volunteer for an organization that helps young people in Ukraine learn English.
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
I would tell new volunteers to spend some time getting to know a little bit about each of the students. Over time you will get a sense of topics they like to write about, what helps them generate ideas of writing, and how they relate to other students.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
I guess my superpower is my imagination. I loved imaginative play as a child, and I still haven’t lost my ability to be playful and creative.
