December Volunteer of the Month: Maya Ghose

News —— December 8, 2025

We’re excited to introduce you to our December Volunteer of the Month, Maya Ghose!

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?

I was looking for some place I could volunteer with kids, because that’s always been a major part of my life and I was missing it. When I discovered 826NYC, I remembered that my father had actually given me an 826NYC book as a Christmas present when I was ten or so as an inspiration for me to keep writing. It felt very serendipitous.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

The people, for sure. The kids are of course fantastic, and it’s amazing to see what their imaginations can come up with. But it’s also been really great meeting the other volunteers and coordinators.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Write After School?

It’s great to have a consistent connection with the same kids over the course of several months, and being able to tackle longer projects. I also really enjoy the field trip programs, but there’s something great about getting to know the kids better week after week that I really enjoy about both the after school and the weekend programs.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

I’m in law school, so a lot of reading and writing! I also volunteer in a legal capacity with various organizations around the city, and I paint, play board games with my friends, and write fanfiction.

826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?

Just go for it! My number one tip would be to listen to the kids, and see if you can connect their interests to whatever is going on that day. Also, don’t be afraid to be silly!

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

Convincing other people that I know what I’m doing.
