April Volunteer of the Month: Erik Larsen

News —— April 2, 2025

We’re excited to introduce you to our April Volunteer of the Month, Erik Larsen! Erik has volunteered in our Write After School program since 2023.

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?

I originally did a summer program at 826LA way back in 2017 at a friend’s urging, and I loved it! Early last year I was looking for a volunteering opportunity that would involve working with kids, and 826NYC was just the thing.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

My favorite part of 826NYC is being part of such a kind and supportive community. I have watched kids come out of their shell and become more confident in expressing their creativity thanks to the support not only from staff, but from their fellow students. The students challenge each other to be creative and take risks, and it is wonderful to see the kids supporting each other.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

It’s hard to choose a favorite part! One of the great joys is seeing the absolutely zany ideas that the students come up with. They have access to a level of creativity and imagination that is as inspiring as it is hilarious.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

I work as a software engineer and also teach a class at NYU on the side. When I’m not working I like to ride my bike, go to the Met, and dance contra (google it!).

826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?

Learn as much as you can about what the students you’re working with are interested in. It can help them get started when they’re struggling with a prompt, and you might be surprised to learn how many cultural touchstones you share.

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

My superpower is that I can predict the future. But it costs $50 per prediction, and accuracy is not guaranteed!
