We’re excited to introduce you to our April Volunteer of the Month, Davida Marion! Davida joined 826NYC at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year and connected right away with our youngest authors in Write After School! Find out more about Davida from her interview below:
826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?
Davida: Before I moved to Brooklyn, I’d been involved in a similar organization. I found the work really rewarding and was so happy to find 826NYC doing similar work.
826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?
Davida: It’s always incredible when one of the students want to share some work that they’ve written with me—whether it’s a full story, a poem, or just a couple sentences they’re proud of. Watching them unlock a love of reading and writing is so much fun.
826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?
Davida: This winter, I could be found lying on my couch reading, and occasionally writing or watching some TV. (Right now I’m watching Ghosts on BBC!) Now that it’s spring, I’ll hopefully be getting outside more on my bicycle; I love exploring on my bike and going to the ocean.
826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Davida: The writing/creative process looks different for every kid! Don’t stress if one student is taking a more winding path to getting words on paper.
826NYC: What are your superpowers?
Davida: Approaching things with curiosity.
