Summer Storytelling & Bookmaking

Three students hold up the bound copies of the story they just wrote together, smiling.

Overview

Step behind our secret door for special Storytelling & Bookmaking workshops this summer! These collaborative writing adventures encourage creative expression, explore the elements of storytelling, and strengthen students’ writing skills. This fast-paced and whimsical 3-hour workshop inspires creativity and excitement to keep your young authors telling their stories long after they leave. Explore spooky stories, mysteries, fantasy tales, and more–or mix and match multiple days!

As a group, students collaborate to pen a brand new, totally original story. With the help of 826NYC’s staff and volunteers, the class will discuss the genre or topic of the day, create a new main character, invent a setting, and write as a group until the story reaches the climax. Then, each student writes and illustrates their own ending to the group’s story. Everyone leaves as a newly-minted published author, with their very own copy of the group’s book featuring their own unique ending.

Workshop Schedule

All workshops meet from 9:30-12:30 at 826NYC: 372 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn. Students in grades 2-4 may participate in any or all workshops from August 4-7.

826NYC is committed to keeping our programs available to the young writers who need our support most. You can choose between the following fee options for Storytelling & Bookmaking: full price ($60 per workshop), partial scholarship ($30 per workshop), or full scholarship (free). Program fees support 826NYC’s mission and help ensure we can work with every young writer who comes our way. We invite families to select the fee that works best for them upon registration and we will honor that choice. No additional scholarship application is required.
