Every Monday and Friday after school over the course of three months, sixth- and seventh-grade students of Robert A. Van Wyck M.S. 217Q wrote about their dreams and plans in a city that feels bigger and bigger every day. With paper and pencils, and the guidance of 826NYC Teaching Artist María Alejandra Barrios Vélez, they outlined the city they have lived in their entire lives or are just beginning to discover. They wrote about colorful days in Times Square, mouth-watering hot dogs, memories with cousins at buzzing Korean BBQs, and the incredible experience of seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time. A mix of English Language Learners and newcomer students, the energy and excitement with which these young authors infuse their writing make their words leap off the page.
It is impossible not to dream with the students as you immerse yourself in the pages of this book, which invites you to celebrate the diversity of NYC, the beauty of its people and families, and the joy that comes with making a city your own. We hope you’ll feel inspired to check out some of these authors’ favorite places around the city this summer, or perhaps take a breath and remember what you love about your own favorite sights in NYC.
