November Volunteer of the Month: Michael Burns

News —— November 1, 2024

We’re excited to introduce you to our November Volunteer of the Month, Michael Burns! Michael began volunteering this year in 826NYC’s Write After School program.

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?

Michael: I first got involved with 826NYC through my high school’s internship program. I initially decided to volunteer so I could branch out my experiences & I hadn’t ever worked with kids before. This unknowingly was one of my best decisions & one that has impacted my future as it’s inspired me to major in English to become a teacher!

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

Michael: My favorite part of 826NYC is witnessing the diverse creativity amongst the kids & how engaged they are with writing when they’re given a chance to fully express who they are. I can see my younger self whenever I enter into 826NYC & it’s so refreshing to see kids who are passionate in using their voice & connecting through writing.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of Write After School?

Michael: My favorite part of Write After School is getting to know the kids I am working with! Familiarizing myself with the kids I see weekly helps me to understand & relate to them better. I’ve always loved the saying, “don’t be a stranger” & with the after school program, no child has to be.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

Michael: I am always listening to music! Music is a major part of my life & a way for me to express how I am feeling, much like writing. I am also a photographer! I’ve been shooting photos my whole life & it’s always been my creative outlet.

826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?

Katrina: It’s not as scary as you think when you first enter the space. Let yourself make mistakes & learn from them. Embody the teacher you loved most in school & keep both your mind & heart open. We’re all in this together!

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

Michael: My superpower is being able to deeply understand others. I am always there to listen to someone regardless of who they are or what they’re dealing with. I will try my absolute best to understand someone & make them feel heard.
