We’re ready for another year of book clubs, ace reporting, creative writing, Dungeons & Dragons, and more — registration is now open for 2022-2023 school year programs! Head right over to the Programs page to see everything that’s available, or read on for a few highlights! You can also RSVP for an upcoming open house to learn more about programs, ask questions, and sign up with the support of an 826NYC staff member.
In this year’s Write Away Workshops we’ll tackle a new theme or genre of writing in each 5-week session, with deep dives on books and media from the genre to support our learning along the way! This year’s topics include ghost stories, myths and origin stories, New York City history, and more!
Write After School is back, with two days each week for grades 1-5 and 6-8. One day will focus on Book Club, as we rotate through students’ picks from graphic novels, short stories, and chapter books and read and write about exciting new themes and characters throughout the year! The second day, Workshop, will cover the same content as Write Away Workshops with a little extra time for writing mechanics, like learning literary devices and building up our grammar and vocabulary toolkits.
We’re taking on nonfiction in Write All About It this year, with Let’s Dish: Food Journalism in the fall and Lights, Camera, Writing: Entertainment Journalism in the spring. Young writers will conduct interviews, learn research skills, and go on 3 in-person field trips each month in this hybrid class that meets primarily on Zoom.
For grades 4-8, Write Away Workshops and Dungeons & Dragons & Writers also have Zoom-based options so you can join the fun from anywhere!
And last but not least, the Teen Writers Collective is once again accepting applications from authors in grades 8-12 who want to build writing and leadership skills in a supportive peer environment.
Let’s get writing!
