March Volunteer of the Month: Cristina Merino

News —— March 2, 2021

We’re excited to introduce you to our March Volunteer of the Month, Cristina Merino. Cristina started volunteering with us in Fall 2021 in our Write After School Book Club! She supported our young readers as they explored new neighborhoods and wrote their own folktales earlier this year. Now she volunteers in our Write Away Workshops! Learn more about her interests and how she found out about 826NYC below!

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC, and why did you decide to volunteer?

Cristina: I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and wanted to give back to my community by volunteering. I first learned about 826NYC from my professor and was really interested in the organization after an 826NYC staff member came to my class as a guest speaker. I love 826NYC’s mission to encourage children to write and read towards better futures they can create. Serving Brooklyn youth is close to my heart as a Brooklyn kid.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

Cristina: My favorite part of 826NYC is the community of people that come together with the same mission in mind. Also, how each kid approaches a writing prompt differently in their own unique style and seeing what they create. I love being part of the writing process. Being fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with kids and learn new things from them.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

Cristina: Outside of 826NYC, I’m a senior in college majoring in writing, so you can find me
working on my senior project/thesis or painting. And of course, taking a walk and listening to music.

826NYC: What advice would you give to a new volunteer?

Cristina: Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t get nervous if you don’t have experience working with younger children.

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

Cristina: My superpowers are reading and writing.
