We’re excited to introduce you to our January Volunteer of the Month, Su Roy. Su started volunteering with us in 2016 in After School Tutoring & Writing (now Write After School). She supported our students when we went virtual in 2020, and is now one of our awesome Write After School volunteers for Stations! 826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC, and why did you decide to volunteer?

Su: I’m honored to be chosen as the January volunteer of the month. I first started volunteering at 826NYC in 2016-2017 with After School Tutoring and again during the pandemic with Write Away Workshops in 2020. It is energizing and awe-inspiring to work creatively with young people.

826NYC: What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

Su: Working with the students and feeling as if I’m learning alongside them.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

Su: Usually working as a boring adult, or hanging with my dog Mary.

826NYC: What advice would you give to a new volunteer?

Su: Talk to the students as if they’re your friends, you’ll build rapport over time

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

Su: Making a mean grilled cheese sandwich, holding my balance, and fitting into small spaces 🙂
