June Volunteer of the Month: Remoy Philip

News —— June 3, 2021

A few passersby (maybe hundreds) have been duped by the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. storefront like June’s volunteer of the month, Remoy Philip! Luckily, his “aha moment” and a peek behind the Secret Door led to a fun and creative tutoring relationship with New York City’s bold and brightest young authors. Keep reading for Remoy’s volunteer highlights and upcoming opportunities with 826NYC!

826NYC: How did you first get involved with 826NYC and why did you decide to volunteer?

Remoy: I had learned about Eggers starting the storefronts like a decade or so back. But I only put 2 and 2 together after I finally passed by and then stopped into the superhero supply and was like “this isn’t really a superhero supply store! It’s a get creative with the next-gen of geniuses store.”

826NYC: What is your favorite part of 826NYC?

Remoy: When I get to be weird, fun creative tutor type. Where I get to brainstorm and come up with fun, clever, wild ideas with the kids where that frenetic inspirational energy is like palpable fun between us.

826NYC: What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

Remoy: I just like creativity and making stuff. Mostly different media–mostly video and audio. But I’ve been known to creatively cook, knit, cook folks on the basketball court, walk across countries, write, … really any outlet where I can exhaust my creativity.
Inevitably, I’ll find random day jobs along the way to pay the bills.

826NYC: What advice would you give a new volunteer?

Remoy: Find Nancy and ask her if she’ll let you borrow some of her tutoring genius.

826NYC: What are your superpowers?

Remoy: Getting excited about making weird, fun, beautiful stuff. Like I’m creative making stuff’s ultimate hype (super) person.
