1. How did you first get involved with 826NYC, and why did you decide to volunteer?

I completed my 826NYC orientation session at the end of 2019, so I’ve only volunteered virtually so far, and I love it. I was thrilled when the writing workshops moved online– being able to work with the kids, especially during such a difficult year, brought some joy back into my weekly routine and restored a bit of normalcy to life. Writing is at the heart of my “origin story,” so volunteering is my way of paying forward the time, encouragement, and inspiration my writing teachers and mentors gave to me.

2. What’s your favorite part of 826NYC?

How the kids approach each writing session with so much enthusiasm, creativity, and fearlessness! I also admire how supportive and kind they are with each other.

3. What do you do when you’re not at 826NYC?

Read, swim, and knit, but not all at once…yet. I write speculative fiction for teens and adults, as well as children’s books. I also run a freelance copywriting business, teach writing workshops, and volunteer with a local literacy organization.

4. What advice would you give a new volunteer?

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It can be challenging to keep the energy up and the kids engaged in online sessions, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a beat to establish or get back into the groove from week to week.

5. What are your superpowers?

I laugh easily (and often), and I’m a bit of an empath (which can also be my kryptonite). Also, I’m a pretty great gift giver.
