We offer free evening and weekend workshops designed to foster creativity, strengthen writing skills, and provide students with a forum for executing projects they might not otherwise have the support to undertake. Workshops range from the playful to the practical, and all are taught by volunteer writers, artists, educators, and publishing professionals.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to increased demand, enrollment for workshops are now determined by lottery. Once you have signed up for a workshop, please look for an email from workshops@826nyc.org, verifying that we have received your request. If you have not heard from us after 48 hours, feel free to call.
Our workshops are limited enrollment and often generate wait lists. With this in mind, please only sign up if you can make every session of a workshop. Thank you!

What Was That? A Workshop on Reading Aloud
2 Tuesday sessions: September 11, 18 (2007)
6-7:30pm
Taught by Margaret Crocker
For ages 10-14
There you are, standing in front, every eye plastered to your face. In your hands you hold a true masterpiece, the work you've been slaving over for weeks. You know that once these people hear your amazing words, their lives will change forever. But they never get to hear your amazing words. Maybe it's because you're standing too far from the microphone. Or maybe you're reading so fast that the words are a blur in their ears. Or maybe you chicken out, run away, and never come back.
We can't let any of these things happen. This workshop covers:
* Choosing a crowd-pleasing excerpt.
* How long is too long?
* Overcoming embarrassment/excitement/terror.
* How to project, slow down, and speak up!
Bring your own work, or the work of your favorite author. The workshop will end in a reading on the 18th at 7pm, so invite your friends and family!

Esther K. Smith is the author of the forthcoming (Nov 07) How to Make Books from Potter Crafts, an imprint of Random House. Smith makes collaborative limited editions and artist books at Purgatory PIe Press in New York City.
